DEADPOOL: @THEREALDPOOLY

2021 SILICON MINI-ZINE

THE COSPLAY: I've been cosplaying Deadpool since 2014, after going to my first convention (FanimeCon 2013) I was inspired by the amazing cosplays that I saw and took pictures of, and I thought to myself "yeah, that's what I wanna do." Deadpool is my favorite superhero, and though I've never had the body type to do a proper classic Deadpool cosplay, I decided to come up with some sort of variant theme for my outfit that would compliment my body. Thus, D-Pooly was born: an unholy amalgam of the Deadpool we all know and love combined with the aesthetic of the Biggie Smalls/E-40 type rappers in the hip-hop music industry. The first version was terrible. Just awful. I had a homemade mask, a couple of plastic bling chains and a Stanford Cardinal sweater. The next year, I saved up some money for a proper mask, a better jacket, nicer chains, weapon props, more accessories and gear until I was satisfied with how it looked.

BIO: I have been cosplaying as Deadpool for roughly 5 years now, at first only at FanimeCon and Halloween. As I made upgrades and variations to the costume and became more involved in the cosplay community, I've found myself going to more conventions and spending time behind the mask. Of course, I didn't choose the mask life, the mask chose me.

Cosplay has been transformative for me, I'm still amazed at the confidence boost and seemingly limitless energy I have when behind the mask. I love and live for those little moments when someone stops and says "Yo, Deadpool!" or "You look so awesome!" or even just laughter and nods, fist bumps in the halls, all that good stuff. It's all quite validating. It makes me happy to know that, hopefully, I just made someone's day. That's what it's all about for me. Being the center of attention and making other people laugh.
