THE FUJIFILM X30 is the perfect camera for photographers who want the traditional handling of a dSLR/rangefinder in a compact size. With its various manual controls, multitude of customizable buttons and electronic viewfinder the X30 offers a shooting experience like no other in the point and shoot camera class.

WHEN I PURCHASED the Nikon P310 I thought that shooting with a LCD screen wouldn’t be an issue. The P310 had everything else that I wanted. It was compact and was one of the few point and shoot cameras with a manual mode.

While the P310 produced perfectly fine images for a point and shoot I just didn’t enjoy shooting with it. I was constantly fighting the screen glare in the sunlight and I couldn’t get use to the fiddly command wheel. Nor did I like the “iphone” style of holding it to take a picture.

 Most critically of all, without the viewfinder it was hard to lose yourself in the shooting process because there was literally a camera in between you and what you’re taking a picture of.

The P310 wasn’t a bad point and shoot camera, but it was exactly that, a point and shoot. I wanted to shoot it like a compact dSLR and (by no fault of the camera) it just wasn’t designed to be shot that way. So away it went and only saw the light of day in the rare situation where I couldn’t use my dSLR.

As of writing this the X30 entire line has been discontinued. Which is a real shame. Perhaps it's failure was that it resided in this inbetween place. Too big to be considered a true compact. Too small (sensor size) to stand among other/compete with other cameras in the same class. Or perhaps in the age of instagram and youtube the lackluster video quality and lack of fully articulating screen did not make it a viable choice for selfies and vlogging. 

When going from the xpro 2 back to the x30 it feels surprisingly natural (even more so than the x100s) due to the layout of the buttons etc.
