LADY CHARLOTTE

THE COSPLAY ZINE: ISSUE 30

THE COSPLAY: Lady Charlotte of House Roselei, Captain of the Blue Rose Knights, is such a complex character. On one  hand, she is stern and cold, stopping at nothing to surpass her limits and become one of the most powerful magic knights despite her curse. On the other, she is soft and sweet when speaking with those  dear to her, and when thinking about Captain Yami! Charlotte is the truest definition of the tsundere character type, one that is more commonly given to men, over women!

Charlotte is able to be one of the most powerful mages in the series, and is able to give this opportunity to other women through her magic knight squad, Blue Rose Knights! Once a mark of her curse, Charlotte uses the imagery of the blue  rose to empower women across the entire kingdom, and assure them they are strong enough to write their own stories.

This cosplay was one I always wanted to create, as my love of her character predates my love of cosplay. Every item of this cosplay is fully handmade by me, and I am still working on adding upgrades to this piece to make it the best it can possibly be!

The majority of my base sewn items are made from various textured spandex, even the bloomers, and  puff sleeves! My capes are sewn out of dupioni and charmeuse silk with taffeta and brocade fabrics as a lining. EVA foam is one material that covers this cosplay from head to toe! My armor is made out of EVA foam and worbla, and includes filigree created from worbla’s Deco Art. Some of my leather craft items are even adhered and sewn directly to thin EVA foam for added structure. The only piece of my armor that is not covered in worbla is my helmet. This piece was the most difficult component to pattern with its abundance of curved edges, raised components, and even a fin!

One piece of this cosplay that took the longest amount of time to construct was the rose whip. It was such a unique prop that I even made a detailed, three part tutorial on how I built it. Using three different types of worbla and over ten different paints and dyes, being able to create this prop piece how I imagined it took much patience and hard work, but it was well worth it in the end.

Being no stranger to flora, I knew I wanted to cover this cosplay with as many roses as possible. Though it now boasts over 160 roses with more to come, at the time of this photoshoot, my cosplay had a total  of 120 roses on it! Can you find them all?

BIO:
Hi, I’m Poppy of Poppy Lop Cosplay. I am a native to the California Bay Area. My first love in life is STEM, but cosplay is quickly becoming a passion that takes up much of my spare time. I began cosplaying, and  making my own cosplays in January 2021 due to an abundance of free time given to me by a series of life events.

Since my first convention in late August 2021, I have won over five awards for my cosplays including Best Master Craftsman at SacAnime, and Best in Show Craftsmanship at Fanime. I have also been a part of panels for craftsmanship, and in publications!

Even with these achievements, I still find myself having much to learn! With each cosplay I craft, I try to teach myself at least one new skill, or figure out more efficient techniques for creating cosplay. Documenting my cosplay journey on Instagram has definitely had its challenges, but I am so honored to be able to learn from so many talented foam smiths, seamstresses, wig makers, prop builders, and more! Every single day I feel so inspired by my fellow creators, and motivated to create the cosplays of my dreams. With each build, I try to make as many tutorials, WIP posts, and videos as I can to share what I have learned. Join me on my Instagram page as we continue to grow, together!
