JOJO’S ANASUI: @MODFOXU

COSPLAY ZINE PROJECT

THE COSPLAY: My Anasui cosplay is by far one of my bigger accomplishments as a cosplayer (outside of Dio, of course.) I was so incredibly proud to wear this to Fanime! The placement of straps (along with even finding a manageable way to get it on) required a bit of brainstorming. I made this Cosplay over the span of a month while working full time and going to school along with making my Elsa cosplay, safe to say it was a con crunch! On top of that, being able to work with Ben who had taken an awesome headshot of my Overhaul cosplay the year before- well let’s just say I was already a huge fan! This character really resonated with me, out of all the colorful selections of Jojo characters. There was something about his undying resolution and devotion to Jolyne that I really valued. Not to mention, his scene with Mickey was absolutely hysterical. Absolute meme gold!

THE BUILD: Anasui has a bare chest covered by diamond shaped straps. Obviously, as the opposite gender I had to make a few accommodations (a bra lol), but despite that I felt the cosplay was overall an easy transition to a genderbend. I mainly used scuba fabric by Yaya Han for the blues in the design, and a stretchy 4 way fuchsia fabric for the straps. Placing the straps to where they would lay correctly required hand stitching a few cross points of the fabric together. This helped when actually putting the cosplay on to wear, cross strap arms aren’t something I would suggest lol. In order to put the cosplay on, I had to make a separate section of the clothing for the arms, and fasten the straps onto the main section using mini safety pins.

For the belt and hat, I used evafoam and crafted the horns out of moldable foam clay, and painted/hammered out the stud lining of the hat. For the middle of the belt that’s connected, I pressed some grommets into the evafoam and strung it together with invisible string to hold it in place and used double sided fabric tape to mount the foot print.

The back of Anasui’s outfit was covered in studs, along with the prison name. I used basic gold studs on the material and cut out and ironed on the wording with a matte white vinyl. The tights I did try to make on my own, however for time sake I ended up buying some while large patterned fishnets along with white thigh high stilettos.

Overall, I loved making this cosplay. It was challenging (as a beginner with sewing/crafting my own cosplays) but consistently gave me the opportunity to brainstorm and come up with new ways to bring what I love to life!

BIO: My first convention was Katsucon 2017, which was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. The energy and passion for an interest that I shared made me feel like I was at home. My very first cosplay was an online purchase (after many hours of research) of Emilia from Re:Zero. I had originally discovered cosplay through the subreddit r/makeupaddict, I still remeber the detailing of Hinatas (from Naruto) Byakugan makeup that I found absolutely fascenating. I began to delve deeper into the cosplay makeup wormhole and was amazed at what makeup artists were able to achieve with simple shading and other unique techniques. This is what started my passion.

I didn’t start crafting my own cosplays from scratch, but my skills grew over the 2 years until I made my first genderbend fanart cosplay entirely from scratch in February 2019 (Dio, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure). As a redditor, I posted my work and gained a following based on this cosplay which then drove me to craft and create even more intricate cosplays such as Dio, Elsa and Anasui. I find the process of crafting and creating things the most fulfilling, making something with my own hands and bringing a passion to life is one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever experienced.
